As an XIR at General Catalyst Partners, George Bell focuses on identifying and supporting digital media and consumer businesses disrupting traditional models.
George has been involved in the creation and growth of consumer businesses for 30 years. Before re-joining General Catalyst, he was CEO of Jumptap, a General Catalyst portfolio company that was sold to Millennial Media (NYSE: MM). Prior to Jumptap, from 2006 to 2010, George was a managing director of General Catalyst, where he focused on investment opportunities in consumer, new media and Internet businesses. Before joining General Catalyst, he was CEO of Upromise, the country’s largest college savings service, which was sold in 2006 to Sallie Mae (NASDAQ: SLM). Previously, George was Chairman and CEO of Excite@Home, bringing together the Excite portal with the @Home cable broadband platform in a $7 billion merger.
George is the recipient of two Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Awards, as well as four national Emmy Awards, which he earned as a producer and writer of adventure, wildlife and vanishing culture documentaries. He is the founder of The Outdoor Life Channel, which was re-named the Versus Network (now NBC Sports Network). George is a graduate of Harvard College, earning a B.A. in English.
